Why Sail in Turkey?
Turkey offers some of the finest marina facilities in Europe, combining excellent infrastructure, high levels of security, exceptional service, and attractive pricing. Many marinas feature outstanding waterfront restaurants and premium amenities that rival those found anywhere in the Mediterranean.
The Turkish coastline is famous for its crystal-clear waters, dramatic scenery, and abundant marine life. Dolphins are frequent companions under sail, particularly in the spectacular Gulf of Fethiye, often affectionately referred to as the “Dolphin Bay” by sailors who regularly cruise the region.
One of the great attractions of sailing in southwestern Turkey is the opportunity to explore remote coves, hidden anchorages, and quiet coastal villages that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.
Although Turkey lies outside the European Union and international border formalities apply when entering Turkish waters, sailors cruising nearby Greek islands may sometimes include visits to the enchanting island of Kastellorizo, one of the eastern Mediterranean’s most fascinating and picturesque destinations.
As Turkey has relatively few offshore islands compared with neighbouring Greece or Croatia, itinerary planning deserves particular attention. Many crews choose one-way charters or carefully designed cruising routes to maximise variety and avoid retracing the same coastline during their voyage.
Fortunately, the Turkish Riviera offers an abundance of marinas, sheltered bays, and anchorages, ensuring that finding a comfortable overnight stop is rarely a challenge.
Some of the region’s premier marinas provide facilities more commonly associated with luxury resorts, including heated swimming pools, wellness areas, spas, jacuzzis, and excellent dining options, creating an exceptionally comfortable experience both on and off the water.
While Turkish marinas offer excellent security standards, greater care is advisable when leaving yachts unattended at remote anchorages or in isolated bays.
Recommended Yacht Charter Season in Turkey
The Turkish sailing season extends from April until the end of November, making it one of the Mediterranean’s longest charter seasons.
July and August – These are the warmest months of the year, with daytime temperatures typically reaching 30–35°C and sea temperatures rising to a delightful 25–28°C. This is also the busiest period, with lively coastal towns and bustling marinas.
May, June, September and October – Many experienced sailors consider these shoulder-season months to offer the ideal balance of weather and tranquillity. Air temperatures generally range between 20°C and 30°C, sea temperatures remain comfortable at approximately 20–25°C, and the coastline becomes noticeably less crowded than during the peak summer period.
These months provide excellent sailing conditions while allowing visitors to experience the Turkish coast at a more relaxed pace.
